Blessing of the Sea

About two dozen trawlers are based in Grandcamp and practice "coastal fishing", as the boats go out from one high tide to the next. Hundreds of tons of fish and shellfish are unloaded every year, especially flat fish (sole, turbot, flounder, limande) or round bottom-feeding fish (halibut, merlan)
From October to April, the fishermen of Grandcamp catch exclusively scallops ("coquilles Saint-Jacques"), using a "drague", a kind of rake with a large pocket, pulled from the rear of the boat on sandy or gravelly sea floors.
Fish is caught with a net called "chalut", a huge pocket let out from the rear of the trawler. The mouth of the net is kept opened with two heavy wood panels on each side of the pocket arms, and with a line of floaters on the top.
